Itzamnaaj Bahlam I

ITZAMNA:J?-BAHLAM. Drawing and transcription after Martin and Grube (2008).

Maya ruler of Yaxchilan. Also known as Shield Jaguar I, Deity Jaguar and GIII Jaguar. Dates of reign unknown.

Itzamnaaj Bahlam's name is spelled somewhat differently in the two retrospective king lists of Yaxchilan. Both employ the jaguar head to represent Bahlam, but Lintel 11 uses the avian version of the great celestial deity to convey the first part of the name, while the hieroglyphic stairway employs the deity's flowery jewel (Martin and Grube 2008:119).

There are no dates connected with Itzamnaaj Bahlam I, but he may have reigned until shortly before the accession of Bird Jaguar I, which appears to have been in AD 378 (ibid.:119).

The foregoing is based on Chronicle of the Maya Kings and Queens by Simon Martin and Nikolai Grube (2008:119).
