|Yopaat Bahlam I|
|YOP-A:T-BAHLAM. Drawing and transcription after Martin and Grube (2008).|
Maya ruler of Yaxchilan also known as Penis Jaguar, Progenitor Jaguar, and Yat Balam. Reigned 359-?.
Dynastic title: Founder.
Acceded: 18.104.22.168.1? 7 Imix? 14 Sots' (July 23, 359?).
The retrospective Lintel 11 of Yaxchilan names Yopaat Bahlam as the first of a series of ten early kings and calls him the naah tal chum ajaw "the first seated lord" (Martin and Grube 2000:118, 2008:118). The inscription then names a lord of another site who was once thought to have attended Yopaat Bahlam's accession as a visiting dignitary but is now construed as a captive of the Yaxchilan king; the prisoner's kingdom is not identified, but his name has some associations with Piedras Negras (ibid.:118-119).
The foregoing is based on Chronicle of the Maya Kings and Queens by Simon Martin and Nikolai Grube (2000:118, 2008:118-119). Martin and Grube cite David Stuart (personal communication 1999) for the Yopaat spelling of the name (rather than the earlier Yo'aat).
Yopaat is a likelier Mayan name than Yo'aat, entailing as it does the word yop "leaf." And Simon Martin (personal communication 2003) points to a yo-po-TE' spelling at Tonina.
