Santiago Atitlán is set beside a profoundly deep lake in the highlands of Guatemala and between three imposing volcanoes, a place which evokes the three hearthstones of creation, where the world was formed as recounted in the Popol Vuh, the epic of the K'iche' Maya people. This is one Maya town whose inhabitants are proud of their independence and uniqueness, and are opinionated about their tradition which is continually under threat from outside influences.

Volcano San Pedro dominates the branch of Lake Atitlán on which the town of Santiago Atitlán sits.
