Detail of the largely geometric sculptural program on the frieze of the House of the Governor. Elsewhere in Mesoamerica (most notably at Tajín, in the State of Veracruz), this kind of scroll has been interpreted as a reference to rain and hurricanes. Given the large amount of foreign influence detectable in later centuries in the Maya area, particularly in the Yucatan, it is not impossible that this motif had a similar interpretation at Uxmal.
