Here you see a minor noble, whose face has been scratched off.
This manner of artistic mutilation is common in Mesoamerica.
By defacing a monument or painting, the ancient or modern Maya could
nulify any power associated with that image.
This feature of the Maya world view has been around for as long
as Maya culture has existed, and was even present before the Maya, with the Olmec.
