Conclusions

The 1998 season was successful on many levels. For the first time in 100 years of investigation, we have an accurate topography map of Palenque's center. The survey goal of 100% coverage was achieved and error was kept to under 10cm.

Many discoveries were made, including 282 previously unrecorded structures, 2 new stelae, and numerous water management features. Finally, the new map was able to reflect the last 25 years of excavation and consolidation.

The Palenque Mapping Project has covered 1/3 of the planned survey area and already it has changed the way we see Palenque. As the project continues into its second and third seasons, a picture of the true Palenque will emerge, a densely populated urban center.

At the project's completion in 2000, we will finally have the data set necessary to do volumetric studies, make population estimates, characterize residential patterns, and to understand to what extent Palenque altered its natural landscape.
