These are "compound sign" elements that do not affect the reading of the logogram. For instance, the animal-skull variant of the Palenque emblem glyph above (glyph K11 of the Palace Tablet) is read K'UH-'AJAW-B'AAK-la, K'uh[ul] B'aakal Ajaw, with no reference to the k'an-cross symbol that is incorporated in the K'UH logogram.
