Although very deteriorated, it is still easy to make out the dominance of red and black in the hues with which this trumpet was painted. Most of the conch trumpets recovered from the shaft tomb of Huitzilapa were painted red and black, so it is tempting to think that this color scheme had specific associations, perhaps mortuary.
