The West Mexican tradition from Nayarit is especially important for its miniature renderings of complex, collective scenes, from meetings in a square to ballgames in progress to little-understood rituals. The scene depicted here has been interpreted as a family scene, but given the fact that the attendants are all males, it is more likely that it depicts a formal meeting or some sort of ritual communion.
