The placement of the cross of Christ in the earth signifies not only his entrance into the underworld in death, but also represents the means by which the resurrected God reemerges to new life from the regenerative center of creation. One of the sacristans who participated in the ceremony told me that the cross is "planted" in the ground just like planting a seed. Christ is thus reborn on the cross just like new maize plants.

The crucifix planted in the "navel" hole in the nave of the church.
