The stairs of Temple XIX, as first revealed by our trench.

The four uppermost steps of Temple XIX are very well preserved and are constructed differently than the rough-cut stone steps set in mud mortar below.

The uppermost steps of Temple XIX are constructed in a manner virtually identical to the northern stairs of Temple XXI. The treads and risers of these steps are faced with thin limestone slabs carefully cut and fit together with a thin layer of stucco mortar at the joins.

As the front of the Temple XIX mound is consolidated the missing lower portion of the stairs will be reconstructed to provide access.
