Many of the Palenque aerials offered here were photographed by Merle Greene Robertson in the early 1970's. The rest were taken from an ultralite in 1999 and provided courtesy of Ed Barnhart. Choose a view from the table of contents, or click here to browse.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Aerial 1 - In the center of the photograph, the structures of the Palace complex surround the multi-story Palace Tower. (The slope of grass on the near left side of the Palace has since been reconsolidated with stairs down to the level of the Great Plaza.) On the far right is the Temple of the Inscriptions. At the top left, the Temple of the Cross sits atop its pyramid rising from Stephens Plaza, with the Temple of the Foliated Cross to its right in shadow. The large structure without a roofcomb near the base of the Temple of Cross pyramid is Temple XIV, with the Temple of the Sun to its right. The view is from the northwest. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 2 - Looking southeast at the Cross Group over the Palace (left) and the Temple of the Inscriptions (right). Clockwise from the left in the Cross Group are the Temple of the Cross, the Temple of the Foliated Cross, the Temple of the Sun and Temple XIV. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 3 - Looking over the Cross Group at the Temple of the Inscriptions (upper left) and the Palace (upper right). The structures visible in the Cross Group are (from left to right) the Temple of the Sun, Temple XIV and the Temple of the Cross. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 4 - The Cross Group. On the left is the Temple of the Cross, which gives the group its name. The large substructure on which it sits is not a man-made pyramid, but an outcrop of El Mirador, the mountain which rises in the background. Continuing clockwise are the Temple of the Foliated Cross, which is set into the flank of El Mirador, the Temple of the Sun and Temple XIV. The view is from the west. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 5 - Looking northeast at The Palace during early reconsolidation. Note the temporary roof on the Tower. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 6 - The huge mass of the Palace complex occupies the center of this photograph. The Temple of the Inscriptions can be seen at the extreme left. In the foreground from left to right are the Temple of the Sun, Temple XIV and the Temple of the Cross. At the top right are the pyramidal Temple of the Count and the adjacent structures of the North Group. The view is from the southeast. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 7 - A distant view of the Temple of the Inscriptions and the city center, with the mountains of Chiapas beyond. The view is from the north. (Photo courtesy Ed Barnhart.)

Aerial 8 - The path from the main site entrance (which was a wide dirt road in the era when this photograph was taken) enters from the lower right. The major structures first encountered are the Temple of the Inscriptions on the right and the Palace on the left. A smaller path leads straight ahead to the Temple of the Cross, the Temple of the Foliated Cross and the Temple of the Sun (identifiable by their roofcombs.) The main path curves left and continues to the old archaeological encampment. Along the way it passes the Temple of the Count and the adjacent structures of the North Group. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 9 - Looking south over the Great Plaza. From left to right are the Cross Group, the Palace, the Temple of the Inscriptions, Temple XIII (where the Red Queen was found), Temple XII-A and Temple XII (also known as the Temple of the Skull or the Temple of the Dead Moon). (Photo courtesy Ed Barnhart.)

Aerial 10 - View of the Great Plaza from the northwest. The Palace is on the left and the Temple of the Inscriptions on the right. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 11 - The Palace is in the center of this view from the northwest, with the Temple of the Inscriptions to the right. Immediately adjacent to the Temple of the Inscriptions and built on the same elevated platform is Temple XIII, with the tomb of the Red Queen. At the top center of the photograph the sun catches the roofcomb of the Temple of the Cross, with the Temple of the Sun below it and to the right. The Ballcourt is visible on the far center left. (Photo courtesy Ed Barnhart.)

Aerial 12 - Looking east at the Temple of the Cross. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 13 - A distant view of the Temple of the Inscriptions and the center of Palenque, with the first ranges of the Eastern Chiapas Mountains towering above. El Mirador, the mountain at the base of which the Cross Group is set, rises about halfway up to the height of the first range, its outline distinguishable by the darker green. The view is from the northwest. (Photo courtesy Ed Barnhart.)

Aerial 14 - Looking down on the Great Plaza. The Palace is on the left and the Temple of the Inscriptions on the right. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 15 - Directly above the Palace, looking south. The steps on the right lead down to the Great Plaza. House C is in the lower center, with the Hieroglyphic Stairway on its left. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 16 - Looking south across the Great Plaza at the Temple of the Inscriptions. The Palace is on the left in the foreground, and the Temple of the Sun on the far left in the distance. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 17 - To the right of the prominent facade of the Temple of Inscriptions in the center of this photograph is Temple XIII. To the left is the Palace. Directly above the Palace is the Temple of the Sun, with the Temple of the Foliated Cross and the Temple of the Cross to its left. (Photo courtesy Ed Barnhart.)

Aerial 18 - A view of the Palace looking north. The Otolum River enters at the lower right and disappears into an underground aqueduct as it passes the Palace. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Aerial 19 - Ground level view looking southwest at the Palace. The Temple of the Inscriptions is behind and to the right, and the Temple of the Sun to the far left. This photograph (which may have gotten mixed in with the aerials by accident) is valuable historically for showing the north end of the Palace before the grass was removed and the stairs reconsolidated. (Photo: Merle Greene Robertson.)

Diagonally from upper left to lower right are the Cross Group, the Palace and the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Ball Court (center right) and the North Group (with the prominent facade of the Temple of the Count).
